Ugly Mutts - Dog Rescue, Dog Adoption, and Dog Placement serving
Toronto, Hamilton, and throughout Southern Ontario.

Hi and welcome to Ugly Mutts Dog Rescue!

Ugly Mutts is a no-kill, not for profit, all breed dog rescue that works with high kill shelters and caring pet owners who are looking for an understanding and compassionate choice when needing to re-home their pets.  The name “Ugly Mutts” is our tongue-in-cheek way of saying “Every dog deserves a safe and happy future.”

Our dedicated and experienced volunteers work as a team to rescue, rehabilitate, train, and provide quality foster care to homeless and owner surrendered pets until they can be placed into suitable, loving, permanent new homes. Dogs accepted into our program are kept in pet-friendly foster homes where they are treated as our own dogs.

With over 25 years of experience our Rescue Volunteers are committed to making a difference and our “Happy Tails” show the culmination of their efforts, the thankfulness of previous owners, and the happy faces of the families who adopted their “Perfect Pet”.

While we aim to aid as many pets as possible, our goal is to join YOU in celebrating and maximizing the fun and enjoyment of owning a dog.

Just a note to our returning friends here that while 4loveofcanines.com will still bring you to our site, uglymutts.com is now officially our new home address.

“The Road To Building A Better Companion Dog”

I felt this was worth sharing and something we could all take encouragement from:

Every month, my wife reminds me how blessed we are to have such well behaved dogs in our life.
And that’s true.
But she also tends to forget the problem behaviors and little “personality defects” that each dog had, when we first adopted them.
And that got me to thinking about the road… the road to building a better companion dog.
It never ends. Do it right, and they just keep getting better and better.
New dog owners need to recognize this. Our techniques work super-fast (usually immediately) - but the road to building a better companion dog is a path that is similar to any relationship you might have with
another human being.
It’s a lot like dating. When you first meet someone new, it’s pretty easy to set the ground rules, early. But it’s not until you’ve had a lot of shared experiences with that other person, that you begin driving down the road to building a real relationship.
Have you ever noticed that you don’t really know somebody, until you take a long road trip with them? That’s because building a strong, long-term relationship takes lots of shared experiences. Lots of
adventures.
Well, it’s the same with your dog.  And as legendary Texas song writer Robert Earl Keen said, “The Road Goes On Forever and the Party Never Ends.”
That’s true. At least for dog training: The road to building a better companion dog, never ends.
Happy Training,
- Adam (DogProblems.com)

Evan Celebrates With His Family.

Evan recently celebrated his first birthday (one year since his adoption) complete with party hats, doggie biscuits and presents!  Apparently the kids were more excited then Evan but he sure loved the attention and the treats!

“This just made me cry…” said Stephanie, Adoption Coordinator for Ugly Mutts

Stephanie, I second that emotion!  If anyone can watch this and keep a dry eye…well, just take a look.

Coalition to Unchain Dogs is based in Durham and Raleigh, North Carolina. They provide free fences to dogs who live continuously at the end of a chain. They also provide free spay/neuter and vaccinations to each fence recipient.

Happy Tails - Tilly

There are many Happy Tails and they are updated often so go take a look if you haven’t already - it is a very “feel good” place to visit.

This was  a recent update sent in by an adopter that just touched me so much I wanted to share it with all of you.

THANK YOU FOR SAVING OUR TILLY

My name is Ashley Borthwick.  My fiancé Neil and I adopted Tilly from your organization on Feb 11th 2009.   We already had two little dogs (12lbs and 20Lbs) and they were best friends but we decided that we had a large enough house, enough time and unquestionably enough love to take one more dog on to complete our family.  We were looking for a larger family dog and when I saw the picture of Tilly I knew I had to have her.

Tilly, Tilson, Tilson Avenue (don’t ask I don’t know why), Till Tills, Tilly Willy any of the above work… oh yes and treat (she comes to that too) has turned out to be the most loveable, obedient, sweet natured baby an owner could ask for.  I appreciate how candid “4theloveofcanines” is with their assessment of the dogs they rescue.  Everything I was told about Tilly was true.    She started off a little nervous, unsure, didn’t seem to understand kisses, wasn’t sure about her curious and often pesty brother and sister, wasn’t fond of stairs or the basement ……. boy did that change quickly!!!!

I have included some pictures for you to show you how amazing Tilly has adapted to her new family.  She has a brother Bunky B and a sister Cookie who is her best pal.  They all get along great but Tilly and Cookie have an extra special bond.  Cookie follows Tilly around everywhere, she has to sniff what Tilly sniffs, run where Tilly runs, eat what Tilly eats….. right out of Tilly’s bowl if she feels to (and Tilly doesn’t mind for a minute).  Cookie is constantly learning from Tilly and I believe Tilly enjoys teaching and protecting her, we find she nutures Cookie like her own pup in many ways.

Tilly and Cookie play together something fierce.  It is such a sight to see them at top speed chase each other around the house (Cookie can cut corners much faster than Tilly or she would be dead in the water) only to roll into each other’s grasps on the couch for a good ole fashion game of play wrestling.  Cookie somehow gets her head into Tilly’s mouth and they can’t seem to get enough of doing that (I guess because there is so much trust between them).

Below is a picture of a conservation park near our house where the dogs run free together and have all kinds of dog friends.  As you can see from the picture Cookie follows Tilly everywhere, she is always racing to keep up in the open fields to her big sister and best pal.    Tilly enjoys long walks and runs and welcomes the opportunity to make new friends with any dog.  She loves initiating games of chase with these new canine friends and carries that on until she is called to see what the next adventure has in store.

We have rented a cottage on a lake this summer for a week and we are heading up there with the dogs at the end of August.  We are hoping to introduce Tilly to swimming and fetch in the water, so we’ll keep you posted on how she does with that milestone.

Neil and I are getting married on Aug 29th and we have decided instead of giving a bombineer to our guests at the end of the evening, we would like to make a donation to the organization that saved Tilly from certain death.   We made up tent cards for our wedding with your information and web site on the card with a picture of Tilly.  We will place a couple on each table and intend to speak about why we chose to forgo a gift for our guests and donate to this wonderful organization.  We have included one of the tent cards with the cheque to your charity in the mail, you should receive this shortly.  We can only hope that it will help rescue another loving dog that needs a safe and happy home!

We were also reading on your web page about your wish list and Tilly has asked if she can pick out the stuff at Pet Smart for the Christmas Care Package we will be sending along to you in December.

Tilly made a huge impact on her two Grammas who love to visit her and babysit her whenever they have the chance.  From Neil and I, Bunky and Cookie and her Grammas, we just wanted to thank you for the efforts you make every day and for bringing Tilly into our lives. We will be forever grateful that we get to be her parents and spend the rest of her days loving and taking care of her.

Love The Borthwicks  (Ashley, Neil, Bunky B, Cookie & Tilly)

P.S. Your Videos on your site are hilarious! Dagmar and the kitty remind me of Tilly and Cookie and the dog dancing to Grease is toooo cute!

My “feel-good” video

Although my passion is working with dogs, some days I feel overwhelmed and worn out. There is any number of reasons for my feeling like this such as the frustration of not being able to get through to an abused dog who is afraid to trust, or something as simple as finding another favorite pair of shoes chewed to bits. Regardless of the reason, when I am in need of a little reminder of why I love dogs so much I like to play this video. Like a charm it always warms my heart and puts a smile back on my face. So, on this rainy Monday night I thought I would share my “feel-good” video with you in hopes that it might put a smile on your face too. Here is Carolyn Scott with Rookie – Enjoy!

Dagmar was adopted by Diane and her family last year. He was picked up as a stray running around Hamilton mountain with a few other dogs. Kudos to Diane and her family for the wonderful job they did in rehabilitating Dagmar!
